The practice of drinking chocolate began over 3500 years ago by people indigenous to South America. By the mid-16th century, chocolate had been introduced to Europe by Spanish colonists. Learn about the history of chocolate, from its ancient routes to its popularity during the American Revolutionary period, when it was often served by Martha Washington at Mount Vernon. See how chocolate is produced, tracing its journey from an unroasted cacao bean to a spiced beverage. Following the demonstration, have a taste of historic unsweetened drinking chocolate.

If you are planning on bringing a group of 10 or more people, please call 207-363-1756 ahead of time to reserve your seats, otherwise registration is not required.
