York was permanently settled beginning in the 1630s by English colonists. Prior to that time, the Abenaki people had been coming to York seasonally for centuries, farming and fishing near York River, and calling the region Agamenticus. Throughout the colonial period, York was the county seat for the Province of Maine, the center of legal activity, and a port town whose economy thrived on maritime trade. This walking tour explores the story of colonial York, and the economic and social transformations that took place following the American Revolution.
The tour begins promptly at the Old York Museum Center at 3 Lindsay Rd. Parking is available along Lindsay Road and in Old York’s parking lot. Please arrive no later than 5 minutes prior to the start time.
